Noen får sagt det ganske treffende:
"Liberal societies that respect individuals and human rights are not built on universal aspirations and singing the Internationale. They are built on conservative institutions and attitudes — property rights, the rule of law, the suburbs and the middle class, religious faith, marriage and family, the work ethic, social convention and tradition, ancient seats of learning, respect for older people. Not everyone holds with all these things all of the time, but it is necessary that a lot of people do a lot of the time."
Daniel Finkelstein in The Times 21 December 2011, i en artikkel om Christpher Hitchens ('Hitch Was Wrong. Liberty Depends on Stability')
